Company Background
James J. Calmes began his career in the construction business in 1959, after his father Don Calmes retired. Initially, James joined the union as a mason. After two years in the masonry business, James became frustrated because he wanted to work more hours.
In 1961, James borrowed $1,500 from his uncle and decided to start his own company. He launched James J. Calmes and Sons and began by building residential homes. Later, driven by a passion for the business, James leaped into the commercial field of construction, too.
After many hard-working years, in 1996, James put his trust in two of his sons who had grown up working in the company: Randy and Todd. Randy took over the office duties of estimating and project management while Todd stayed in the field.
In 1999, Calmes Construction experienced more growth, adding TRC MidValley Utilities division to the company. TRC MidValley Utilities, now head by Todd, performs excavation and the installation of site utilities.
James retired in 2000 and sold his business to Todd and Randy. Randy assumed the position of president and Todd took over the duties of Vice President.
The summer of 2006 brought a third division to the company: Calmes Customs. This division builds custom cabinets, bars, theater seating and other specialty casework.
